Polynesian Fish Hooks
Known as Makau in Hawaiian, hand carved fish hooks were used by artisanal fishermen as a means of providing for their people. Made from materials that were available, including bone, shell, or wood, these hooks started as a basic tool of sustenance but have evolved in to a symbol of prosperity, self sufficiency, and the special relationship that Hawaiians have with the sea.
These hooks are reproductions of actual hooks made by ancient Polynesian craftsmen. Because of the variations in shell coloration and patterns, no two hooks are exactly alike. Each hook is an original work of art.
